Over the last few weeks, my posts have been about the Russell/Doyle branch of the family. I’ve decided to continue with this branch in my post this week, and my ancestor is Maria Louisa Doyle. Maria was the daughter of Thomas Doyle (my ancestor for week 2 (2015 series)) and Catherine Mills (my ancestor for week 32 (2014 series)).
Maria was born 17 December 1846, and baptised 8 February 1847 at Parish of St Phillip Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

The 1851 England Census shows Louisa Doyle age 3 with her parents Thomas and Caterine Doyle at Deritend And Bordesley, Aston, Warwickshire, England. Also in the household was Allen Doyle, age 2, a servant Ellen Clark, and 2 visitors, Thomas Jeffcoat and John Pearman.

On the 1861 England Census, Maria L Doyle, age 14, was with her mother Katherine Doyle at 113 Brearley St, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Also with them were Sarah A Doyle age 10, John G Doyle age 8, William S Doyle age 7 and Frank Doyle age 4.

In 1862, the family emigrated to Australia on the “Great Britain”. They arrived in Victoria in August 1862. The family included Thos age 45, Cath age 40, Louisa age 14, Sarah A age 11, John G age 9, William age 8 and Frank age 6. At the time, Louisa’s occupation was listed as “spinster”.

Maria was married 3 years after arriving in Victoria. She married Henry Russell on 17 April 1865 at Buninyong. Maria was a spinster, age 18, birthplace Birmingham, England, residence Buninyong, parents Thomas Doyle, teacher, and Catherine Mills.
They were married by G J Russell, Incumbent of Buninyong, according to the rites and ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland, with the consent of Thomas Doyle the Father of the Bride who was a minor. The witnesses were J Russell and T Doyle.

Maria died 28 November 1925 at the Mental Hospital, Wendouree, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She was buried 1 December 1925 at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
