Historic events on my grandmother’s birth date.

This post was on the Genea-Musings blog by Randy Seaver on Saturday 14 March 2015 – Saturday Night Genealogy Fun — The Date Your Grandmother Was Born

Although it’s a week late, here are my answers to his questions.

What day of the week was your grandmother born? How did you find out?

Ivy May Harley was born 6 September 1890, which was a Saturday.  I use Legacy Family Tree, so I can look up the day any event occurred by using the built in Calendar.

What event was a headline in the newspapers on that date? Tell us how you found out.

Since my grandmother was born in a suburb of Melbourne, and one of the newspapers from Melbourne is available online, I decided to have a look at the online issues at Trove.

To find the issue for the 6 September 1890 on the main page, I selected Digitised Newspapers and More.

Then I clicked on the drop down list under by Date, until I found 1890, then I selected the month, September, and then the date, 6.  Then I chose the newspaper – The Argus, Melbourne,Viic 1848-1957

Generally, headlines are on the 1st page of the newspaper – The Argus was quite different – headlines were on page 9.  These included

Great Fire at Salonica

Serious Flooding in Bohemia Prague Inundated. Many lives lost.

Arrest of Moussa Bey,

The Eisteddford.  .

Proposed Memorial to Cardinal Newman

The Cholera Outbreak at Natal

3) What has happened in recorded history on your Grandmother’s birth date (day and month)? Tell us how you found out, and list five events.
