52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

52 Ancestors (2014) #41 Joseph Wimpey (1761-1790)

My ancestor last week was Rebekah Dredge. This week I will look at her husband Joseph Whimpey.

Not much is known about Joseph.  The following information comes from the parish registers transcriptions for Frome in Somerset, which are available on the FreeReg website.  Although the parish registers spell the surname Wimpew and later Wimpey, I have used the spelling Whimpey in my family tree, as that is the spelling used in the family since arriving in Australia.

Joseph was baptised 29 August 1761 at St John the Baptist Parish. His parents were John and Susan Wimpew (filenumber 29102).

Joseph married Rebekah Dredge 10 June 1783 at St John the Baptist Parish (register number 267).  Joseph and Rebekah were both of this parish.  The witnesses were Thomas Jones and John Deacon.  They were married by Banns (filenumber 29318)

They had the following children, all baptised at St John the Baptist Parish:

Joseph, baptised 17 January 1784 parents Joseph & Rebekah Wimpew file number 29102

Susanna, baptised 24 September 1785 parents Joseph & Rebekah Wimpey filenumber 29102

John, baptised 31 March 1787 parents Joseph & Rebekah Wimpey filenumber 29102

William, baptised 27 March 1790, parents Joseph & Rebekah Wimpey filenumber 29102 (William was born about 1789, and baptised after his father’s death)

Edward, baptised 2 March 1793, parents Joseph & Rebekah Wimpy filenumber 29102 (Edward was born about 1790, and baptised late).

Joseph was buried 8 February 1790 at St John the Baptist Parish, Frome (filenumber 28931).
