52 Ancestors (2014) #45 Mary Gill

This week, I have chosen as my ancestor my gg grandmother Mary Gill.  Based on her marriage and death certificates, Mary was born in 1829 in Cumberland, England and her parents were William Gill and Mary Scott.  There is an entry on the International Genealogical Index that seems to match – Mary Gill, christened 1 Nov 1829 in Torpenhow, Cumberland, England, parents William and Mary.

The 1841 England Census shows a Mary Gill, born 1829, at Aspatria in Cumberland (Ancestry.com. 1841 England Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc, 2010. HO107; Piece: 160; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Aspatria; County: Cumberland; Enumeration District: 10; Folio: 10; Page: 14; Line: 25; GSU roll: 241278)

The household consisted of:

William Gill, age 50

Mary Gill, age 45

John Gill, age 15

Jane Gill, age 14

Mary Gill, age 12

(This information corresponds with the information on Mary’s mother’s death certificate).

By 1851, Mary appears to have left home to go into service, as I can only find the entry for her mother, Mary Gill (nee Scott), and brother John.
