52 Ancestors (2014) #52 Stephen Campkin

My line back to Stephen Campkin is:

  • My Mum – Edith Jean Marr 1922-1990
  • Her mother – Edith Meriden Docwra 1904-1948
  • Her mother – Emily Alice Oliver 1877-1925
  • Her father – George Oliver 1846-1930
  • His mother – Susannah Campkin 1827-1880
  • Her father – Stephen Campkin 1795-1869

Tracing my family back to Susannah was fairly straight forward, as the family had all lived in Victoria, Australia, which made obtaining the birth, death and marriage certificates easy.  It was trying to trace Susannah prior to her marriage to Frederick, and therefore her parents’ names, that was harder.

Originally, when I accessed the International Genealogical Index, I had found a baptism for a Susannah Campkin that was around the right time period.  This Susannah’s parents were Francis Campkin and Flora Bullen.  The only problem was, Susannah’s death certificate listed her father as William.

Then I came across an online family tree that showed Susannah Campkin who married Frederick Oliver as the daughter of Stephen Campkin and Rebecca Pewter.  Later on, I obtained Frederick and Susannah’s marriage certificate, which listed her father as Stephen, which seems to confirm the information in the online tree.

Now, I needed to find out more information about Stephen.  I started with the 1841 England Census, since Susannah would probably have still been living with her parents.  This census showed Stephen living at Lane, Melbourn, Cambridgeshire.  He was age 47 and born in Cambridgeshire.  Also in the household was Rebecca age 47, Isaac age 18, Josiah age 16, Susannah age 14, Livesay age 9 and Samuel age 6.

Since the 1841 census rounded ages to the nearest 5 years, I decided to look for Stephen on the 1851 census, to establish his birthplace, and narrow down his year of birth.

The 1851 England Census showed Stephen was at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire.  He was the head of the household and was born about 1793 in Bassingbourne.  Also in the household was his son Samuel Campkin b abt 1835, daughter in law Martha Campkin b abt 1821, grandson W G Campkin b abt 1848, granddaughter Frances Campkin b abt 1850, granddaughter Reb Campkin b abt 1850.

Although originally I used the International Genealogical Index, firstly on microfiche and then on the FamilySearch website, since I now have the transcriptions of the parish registers from Melbourn and Bassingbourn on CD (from the Cambridgeshire Family History Society), I have decided to set out the information I found for Stephen on these.

The Bassingbourn Baptisms show:

1795 May 24 Campkin Stephen son of Samuel & Rosamond.

Stephen was christened on the same day as his sister Edith

1795 May 24 Campkin Edith dau of Samuel & Rosamond

The Melbourn Marriages show:

1814 Mar 28 Campkin Stephen otp
Pewter Rebecca otp
Wits: Stoughten Campkin, Elizabeth Hagger

Stephen and Rebecca had the following children:

  • Emma born 14 August 1814 baptized 4 Sep 1814 buried 12 Jul 1815 aged 11 months
  • George born 14 Oct 1815 baptized 5 Nov 1815
  • Emma born 22 Apr 1818 baptized 16 May 1818
  • Ambrose born 5 Jul 1820 baptized 30 Jul 1820 buried 8 Nov 1830 aged 10 years
  • Isaac born 1 Apr 1823 baptized 27 Apr 1823
  • Susannah born 14 May 1827 baptized 15 Jun 1827
  • Liuesea Ann (Lucy Ann) born 1 Jan 1830 baptized 28 Mar 1830 buried 16 Nov 1832 aged 2 years
  • Livesay Ann (Louisa Ann) baptized 27 Jan 1833
  • Samuel baptized 30 Nov 1834

The two oldest living children, George and Emma, were not with their parents on the 1841 census – later research showed George married Elizabeth Bell in 1837, and Emma married Benjamin Farrow, also in 1837. The census listed another child, Josiah, who doesn’t appear on the parish registers.

The next thing I searched for was Stephen on the 1861 Census.  This showed Stephen in the household of his son in law Benjamin Farrow at Earles Lane, Thetford St Cuthbert, Thetford, Norfolk.  Stephen was widowed, aged 66, umbrella & shoemaker, birthplace Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire.

There is a death entry that appears to be for Stephen in 1869 at Thetford (FreeBMD, England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 (Name: Ancestry.com Operations Inc; Location: Provo, UT, USA; Date: 2006;), (http://www.ancestry.com.au/ : accessed 16 Nov 2009), entry for Stephen Campkin, volume 4b, page 256, Oct-Nov-Dec quarter 1869, Thetford district; citing the General Register Office’s England and Wales Civil Registration Indexes.).  A Public Member Tree at ancestry http://trees.ancestry.com.au/tree/78957056/person/42394655203 includes the image of his death notice:
