Sunday afternoon genealogy fun – Golden Anniversaries

Each week on Randy Seaver’s Genea-musings blog he has a post for Saturday night Genealogy fun.  Because of the time difference, I have called my series Sunday Afternoon Genealogy Fun.  This week the mission was:

 1) After I wrote my blog post yesterday about the newspaper article for my second great-grandparents golden wedding anniversary, I thought to myself “Self, that would be a good SNGF topic.”

2)  So – the challenge today is to find out which of your ancestors have celebrated a golden wedding anniversary – 50 years of marital bliss (?).  Was there a newspaper article about it?

3)  Share your results in your own blog post, in a comment to this blogp ost, or on Facebook or Google+.

I only went back to my 3x great grandparents, as I have quite a few gaps in the information for my 4x great grandparents.

My parents:

Ivon Walter Whimpey and Edith Jean Marr, married 1952, Mum died in 1990, 38 years

My grandparents:

John Ernest Whimpey and Ivy May Harley, married 1914, Ivy died in 1959, 45 years

Wilfred Palmer Marr and Edith Meriden Docwra, married 1922, Edith died in 1948, 26 years

My great grandparents:

Joseph Whimpey and Sarah Jane Sharp, married 1872, Sarah died in 1906, 34 years

Alexander Alexander Harley and Henrietta Louisa Russell, married 1888, Alex died in 1939 – 51 years

Henry Palmer Marr and Mary Reeves, married 1883, Henry died in 1944 – 61 years

Harry Docwra and Emily Alice Oliver, married 1902, Emily died in 1925, 23 years

My 2x great grandparents

Joseph Whimpey and Margaret Price, married 1840, Margaret died in 1901 – 61 years

Henry Sharp and Jane Elizabeth Oldroyd, married 1847, Henry died in 1892, 45 years

Robert Harley and Euphemia Dandie, married 1846, Robert died in 1892, 46 years

Thomas Henry Russell and Maria Louisa Doyle, married 1865, Henry died 1892, 27 years

James Marr and Martha Richardson, married 1845, Martha died in 1882, 37 years

William John Reeves and Mary Gill, married in 1858, William died in 1888, 30 years

Alfred Docwra and Mary Scott, married in 1852, Mary died In 1885, 33 years

George Oliver and Elizabeth Ann Ball, married in 1875, Elizabeth died in 1909, 34 years

Back to my 2x great grandparents, out of 15 couples, only 3 celebrated a 50th anniversary.  Of these, 2 also celebrated a 60th anniversary.

In my 3x great grandparents, only 1 couple celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Mark Oldroyd and Elizabeth Sidebottom, married 1816, Mark died in 1868 – 52 years

Of the 31 couples I looked at, 1 couple weren’t married, I only have the husband’s name for another couple, and, although I don’t have a marriage date for another couple, I know the wife died when she was 55 years old,  The average years married for the other 28 was 36.6 years.

At this stage, I haven’t found a newspaper article for any of the couples who celebrated a Golden Wedding anniversary.

Update: Although I haven’t found an article about those celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary, I did realise that Henry Palmer Marr’s obituary mentions that he and his wife had celebrated their Diamond anniversary the previous October.
