Wednesdays Resources – Top free genealogy websites from Australia

On Monday I came across the post, 10 most recommended Free Genealogy research Sites at Familyhistorydaily.com. This site also had the related Top 50 Free Genealogy sites, and 25 Free Genealogy sites lists.

These lists only mentioned one website from Australia, Linc Tasmania, so I have decided to set up my own list of the main free websites I use for researching my family history in Australia.

The following 5 websites have records from around Australia:

Biographical Database of Australia BDA is a new research tool for historians and genealogists comprising transcripts and indexes of many original records and published biographies of deceased individuals who arrived in or were born in Australia, starting from the earliest times.

National Library of Australia.  The main collection on this site is the Trove Newspapers and More collection, but this website also contains other resources from around Australia.

National Archives Australia.  This website has a collection of war records, naturalisation papers and other miscellaneous records that are free to search. The World War 1 and Naturalisation papers are free to view online.

Australian War Memorial.  This website contains records of Australians in the various Wars Australia had been

Australian Cemeteries.  There are many cemeteries around Australia that have free online indexes.  This website gives details of the contact person for cemeteries around Australia, as well as links to online indexes.

Each state and territory has its own “Archives”, and the following have online collections.  These archives contains records such as immigration, Wills & probate and inquests.

Each state and territory also has a Registry of births, deaths and marriages (or equivalent).  The following provide free online indexes.
