Surname Saturday – Crook

At this stage, I only have one ancestor in my tree with this name, Maria Crook.

My line is

1 Lois Whimpey

2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)

6 Wilfred Palmer Marr (1892-1955)
7 Edith Meriden Docwra (1904-1948)

12 Henry Palmer Marr (1859-1944)
13 Mary Reeves (1864-1951)

26 William John Reeves (1827-1888)
27 Mary Gill (1829-1903)

52 William Reeves (1803-1877)
53 Maria Crook (1807-1870).

Maria Crook married William Reeves on 16 May 1827 at East Stonehouse, Devon, England.

The 1841 census shows Maria, age 34, with William Reeves, age 36 at Shepton Mallet.  Maria was not born in the county.  Also with them were William Reeves age 13, Thomas age 10, Emelia age 7, and Robert age 5.

The 1851 census shows they were still in Shepton Mallet, in Cowl Street.  The household consisted of William Reeves, age 48, head of household, general labourer, born in Shepton Mallet, wife M Reeves age 44, born in Kingsbridge, Devon, and daughter A Reeves age 17, son R Reeves age 15, son J Reeves age 8, daughter Selina Reeves age 6 and daughter R Reeves age 8.

The 1861 census shows they were in East Stonehouse.  At this time William was 58 years old, labourer, birthplace Shepton Mallet, wife Maria age 55 born in Devonshire, and daughters Selena age 17, and Rosene age 14.

In 1871 William was living with his daughter Selina’s family.  He was a widower, which indicates Maria died between 1861 and 1871.  There is a death entry in 1870 in East Stonehouse which is probably for our Maria:

Maria Reeves, born about 1804, died Jan-Feb-Mar quarter 1870, age 66, district East Stonehouse, vol 5b page 262.

Although the death entry lists her estimated birth year as 1804, the census records indicate she was born about 1807 (34 in 1841, 44 in 1851 and 55 in 1861),

Since I hadn’t looked for a baptism record for Maria yet, I decided to have a look today to see if I could find her baptism, and maybe extend her family back a few generations.  I had a look online for where I might find the Parish Registers for Devon.  Although some of this information is on Family Search (England, Devon, Parish Registers, 1538-1912), there was no entry for Maria Crook.  The Devon County Council website states that the Parish Registers have now been digitised and some are available at FindMyPast, so I decided to check FindMyPast.

A search for a Maria Crook, born 1807 +-5 years resulted in the following entry at Dodbrooke, Devon:

1807 Jan 4th Maria d of Robert & Mary Crook

Since Dodbrooke is now part of the town of Kingsbridge, which is the birthplace listed for Maria on the 1851 census, this appears to be the baptism for my Maria.

I then searched FindMyPast to see if I could find the marriage of Robert and Mary.  I found a marriage in 1800 at Wolborough, but the wife’s name was Ann, not Mary.  There was another marriage in 1798 at Tiverton, but the wife’s name for this marriage was Elizabeth.  The next marriage listed was in 1818, which is well after Maria’s birth.  It therefore appears that the marriage for my Robert is not available online at this stage, so this has been the furthest I have been able to go back for this family at this stage.

I had a look on the 1841 census to see if Robert was still alive, but without more information on where he was born, I was unable to determine if any of the entries I found were for my Robert.

I decided to do a general search at ancestry for a Robert Crook born about 1780 in Devon. There was an entry for a Public Member Tree which showed Robert Crook, born about 1770 in Devon, was married to a Mary Raines, father William Crook  This has provided me with a possible surname for his wife, as well as a possible name for his father.  At the moment, I only have a Pay-Per-View subscription to ancestry, so I can’t get in to the family tree for more details.
