Surname Saturday – Dransfield

At this stage, my link back to the Dransfield surname is tentative.

I have been able to trace my line back through Australian records to my 3x great grandparents, Mark Oldroyd and Elizabeth Sidebottom, and I have been able to find Mark and Elizabeth on the records in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.  Elizabeth’s age varies slightly from year to year in the census records (45 in 1841, age 54 in 1851, age 64 in 1861, age 76 in 1871), but from these records I can determine she was born between 1794 and 1796.

There are two possible baptism in the West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812 collection at ancestry

Elizabeth Sidebottom baptism 5 Mar 1796 at All Saints, Wakefield, father John Sidebottom, mother Faith

Elizabeth Sidebottom baptism 21 Aug 1796 at St John the Baptist, Wakefield, father David mother Sarah

There is also an entry in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 collection which shows the Elizabeth Sidebottom baptised 5 Mar 1796 died 2 Jan 1800.  I decided to double check the entry in the West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812 collection.  The entry on the index gave her age as 49 (born in 1751), and father John.  On checking the original image, her age appears to be 4 yrs, rather than 49.  Since this would mean that the Elizabeth baptised 5 Mar 1796 died in 1800, this would indicate that my Elizabeth was the daughter of David and Sarah.

Most parish registers in England only list the mother’s given name, not her maiden surname.  The baptism record for Elizabeth was particularly helpful, as the record shows:

Elizabeth, daughter of David & Sarah Sidebottom, daughter of William and Hannah Lockwood.

This record not only provided me with Sarah’s maiden name, but also her parents’ names.

David Sidebottom and Sarah Lockwood were married 7 December 1783 at All Saints, Wakefield.

Based on the marriage year, I then searched for a David Sidebottom born about 1760 in Wakefield.  There were two possible baptisms:

David Sidebottom, father Jon, baptism 14 Apr 1753, Wakefield, All Saints

David Sidebottom, father John, baptism 4 Jan 1754, Wakefield, All Saints.

There is also a death in the West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812 for a David Sidebottom, born in 1754, who was buried 20 Sep 1806 at Wakefield, St John the Baptist.   It therefore appeared the baptism in 1754 was for my David.

The only marriage I could find in Wakefield for a John Sidebottom using 1745 +-10 years was the marriage of John Sidebottom to Sarah Dransfield on 8 December 1740 at Wakefield, All Saints.

  1. Hello Lois,

I found your name on a record for Edward Youngman Cotton. My wife, Olga Marie, is a direct decendant. I have looked at the line you have posted and I can’t make a connection.

    Can you fill me in?

    Regards

    1. The connection is quite distant.

Edward Youngman Cotton married Harriett Follett. Harriett was the daughter of Robert Follett and Elizabeth Male, who were married in 1823 in South Petherton, Somerset, England. Elizabeth Male was the daughter of James Male and Susannah Willy.

Elizabeth Male had a brother Simeon Male who married Esther Laver. Esther Laver was the daughter of Samuel Laver and Phillis Fidley. Samuel Laver was the son of Nicholas Laver and Anna Patten. Nicholas was the son of Samuel and Mary Laver, and that Samuel Laver was the son of John Laver and Joan Axe.

John Laver and Joan Axe also had a son John Laver who married Elizabeth Wills. John Laver and Elizabeth Wills had a son Samuel Laver who married Susannah Hebditch. Samuel and Susannah had a son John Laver who married Sarah Duck. John Laver and Sarah Duck had a son George Laver who married Elizabeth Male (this Elizabeth Male was the daughter of Robert Male and Hannah Isaac).

My ex-husband is descended from George Laver and Elizabeth Male’s son Thomas Laver.
