52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

52 Ancestors #46 Selina Lavinia Reeves

Amy Johnson Crow introduced the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge on her No Story Too Small blog in 2014. This year she continued the challenge, but also added a weekly theme.  This week the topic is “Changes”. Highlight an ancestor that went through many changes or that you had to change your research strategies to find.

The person I have decided to write about is Selina Lavinia Reeves, the sister of my 2x great grandfather William John Reeves, since she had a few changes of address.

Selina was the daughter of William Reeves and Maria Crook.  Her baptism record was found at FreeReg.  She was born 23 Jun 1844, and christened 3 Jul 1844 at SS Peter and Paul, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England1.

The 1851 census shows Selina in the household of William Reeves in Cowl Street, Shepton Mallet. Selina was 6 years old, and listed as William’s daughter2.

By 1861, the family had moved back to East Stonehouse in Devon (Selina had older siblings who had been born in East Stonehouse).  The 1861 census shows Selena was in the household of William Reeves.  Selena was age 17, her occupation was servant, and she was William’s daughter3.

Selina was married in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter 1865 in East Stonehouse4.  The others on the page were Mary Jane Austin, Ewen Crowther and John Salmon.  The 1871 census shows a Selina Salmon was in the household of John Salmon at East Stonehouse.  Selena was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.  Selina’s father, William Reeves, was also listed in the household.  At this time Selena and John had 4 children, John W, Salmon age 6, Caroline Salmon age 5, Sarah Salmon age 3, and Emily Salmon age 15.

By 1881, Selina was a widow, and she had moved to Weston, (Bath), Somerset.  She was living at Cottles Buildings.  She was 35 years old, and her occupation was laundress.  Also in the household were daughter Sarah R. Salmon, age 13, Emily J. Salmon age 11, Florence B. Salmon age 8, and Rosina Salmon age 11 months6.

There is a marriage entry for Selina Lavinia Salmon in 1883 in Bath7.  Also on the page were Henry Cliff, William Phillip Jones, and Annie Motlman.

The 1891 census shows a Selina Jones, birthplace Shepton Mallet, living at 11 Wellington Building, Weston, Somerset.  The head of the household was William P. Jones.  Also in the household were Rosina Jones age 10, Nellie L Jones age 8, and Maud M. Jones age 58.

The 1901 Census shows Selina L. Jones was still living at 11 Wellington Building, Weston. Selina was still a laundress.  Selina was again listed as a widow.  Also in the household were daughter Emily J. Salmon age 31, daughter Nellie L. Jones age 17, and daughter Maud M. Jones age 15 years9.

The 1911 Census shows Selina Jones age 65 was in the household Herbert Sidney Morgan at 11 Wellington Bldgs, Upper Weston, Bath, Somerset, England. She was his mother-in-law.  Also in the household was Herbert’s wife Maud Mary Morgan, age 25, and their children, Thomas Alfred Henry Morgan age 3 and Gwendoline Kitty Morgan age 5 months10.

There is a death entry for a Selina L. Jones in 1926 in the Bath registration district that may be for our Selina11.  I still need to obtain the death certificate to confirm this.
