Surname Saturday

Surname Saturday – Gill

The first person in my tree with this surname is my 2x great grandmother Mary Gill.

My ancestral line is:

1 Lois Whimpey

2 Ivon Walter Whimpey 1923-2009
3 Edith Jean Marr 1922-1990

6 Wilfred Palmer Marr 1892-1955
7 Edith Meriden Docwra 1904-1948

12 Henry Palmer Marr 1859-1944
13 Mary Reeves 1854-1951

26 William John Reeves 1828-1888
27 Mary Gill 1829-1903

I have already written about Mary in my 52 ancestors series (52 Ancestors (2014) #45 Mary Gill), so the following is just a quick summary:

Mary was born in Cumberland, England, and baptised 1 November 1829 at Torpenhow, Cumberland, England.  Her parents were William Gill and Mary Scott.

Her father died between 1841 and 1851, and in 1853 Mary, her mother, and Mary’s brother John and sister Jane travelled to Australia.

Mary married William John Reeves on 3 August 1858 in Amherst, Victoria.  They had five children, and Mary died 21 December 1903 in Ararat, Victoria.

Very little is known about Mary’s father William Gill as the only record found for him is the 1841 England Census.  At the time, the family were living at Aspatria, Cumberland.  William was listed as 50 years old, and was not born in the county.  He died between 1841 and 1851 (on the 1851 census his wife is listed as a widow).

Since I don’t have a precise year of birth, or a birthplace, for William, I have not been able to trace this family back any further at this stage.
