Surname Saturday – Greene

The first person with this surname in my tree is my 3x great grandmother Susan Greene.

My line is

1 Lois Whimpey

2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)

4 John Ernest Whimpey (1884-1960)
5 Ivy May Harley (1890-1959)

10 Alexander Alexander Harley (1866-1939)
11 Henrietta Louisa Russell (1865-1949)

22 Thomas Henry Russell (1844-1892)
21 Maria Louisa Doyle (1847-1925).

44 Garrett John Russell (1817-1877)
45 Susan Greene (1818-1884).

The first information I had for Susan was her name from her son Thomas Henry Russell’s marriage certificate.  Later, I found a death entry that I thought was probably for her in 1884 in South Melbourne.  The death entry showed she was 66 years old, which indicated a birth year of 1818.

At the time I found her death entry, I already had her husband, Garrett John Russell’s death certificate.  Garrett died in 1877. This certificate showed that Garrett was about 19 years old when they married and that they had married in Ireland.  At the time of his death, he was listed as being 57 years old, indicating they were married about 1839.  His death certificate also showed they had the following children:

  • Charles Russell age 37
  • Martin age 35
  • John William age 34
  • Thomas Henry age 33
  • Susanna Maria age 28
  • Edward age 25
  • Robert Frederick 23
  • Francis Richard 21

In 2001, I attended the Russell family reunion at the Holy Trinity Church in Buninyong, where Garrett had been the incumbent from the time the family arrived in Australia around 1856, until his death in 1877.  At the time of his reunion, I also visited the family grave in the Buninyong Cemetery.

This gravestone also confirmed that the death entry I had found was for Susan.  Unfortunately, her death entry did not provide her parents’ names.

Although we have since found Garrett’s baptism record in the Irish parish registers, we have been unable to find the baptism record for Susan, as we don’t know who her parents were, or which parish she would have been baptised in.  Also, although I have found an index entry for their marriage, this only provided the information that they were married in 1839 in Cork, Ireland.  The exact date and parish where they were married is not yet known.

I therefore have not traced the Greene family any further back than Susan.
