Surname Saturday – Lockwood

The first person in my tree with this surname is Sarah Lockwood.

My ancestral line is

1. Lois V. Whimpey

2. Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3. Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)

4. John Ernest Whimpey (1884-1960)
5. Ivy May Harley (1890-1959)

8. Joseph Whimpey (1848-1919)
9. Sarah Jane Sharp (1853-1906)

18. Henry Sharp (1826-1892)
19. Jane Elizabeth Oldroyd (1828-1902)

38. Mark Oldroyd (1791-1868)
39. Elizabeth Sidebottom (1796-1878)

78. David Sidebottom (1754-1806)
79. Sarah Lockwood (1762-?).

Sarah would have been born about 1760.  She married David Sidebottom on 7 December 1783 at All Saints Parish, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.  Their daughter Elizabeth’s baptism record shows:

Elizabeth Sidebottom baptism, “West Yorkshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812,” database and images, ( : accessed 12 Mar 2016); Elizabeth Sidebottom baptism 21 August 1796; West Yorkshire Archive Service; Wakefield, Yorkshire, England; Yorkshire Parish Records; Old Reference Number: D45/1/1; New Reference Number: WDP45/1/1/1.

Augst 21 Sidebottom Elizabeth daughter of David & Sarah Sidebottom, daughter of William and Hannah Lockwood.

From this christening record, it would appear that Sarah’s parents were named William and Hannah.  I have found a marriage record for a William Lockwood to Hannah Smith on 7 October 1762 at Kirkburton, Yorkshire, England1.  There is also a baptism record for Sarah Lockwood, father William, christened 23 April 1764 at Kirkburton2.  Kirkburton is only 11 miles from Wakefield, so, without any other entries that match the details for my Sarah, these appear to be for my Sarah and her parents.
