My 2x great grandfather Joseph Whimpey was born in Somerset, and he came to Australia with his wife Margaret, his brother John, and John’s wife Caroline, in 1841 on the Ward Chipman. After I found this information on the Assisted Immigrant lists, I wanted to know more about their voyage to Australia, so I went looking for a book that could give me these details.
That’s when I found the book The Somerset years by Florence Chuk. (Florence Chuk, The Somerset years : government-assisted emigrants from Somerset and Bristol who arrived in Port Phillip/Victoria, 1839-1854 (Ballarat, Victoria, Australia: Pennard Hill Publications, 1987).
This book not only included information about the ship, and a description of the voyage out to Australia, but it also gave a brief history of Somerset, details about what the emigrants needed for the voyage, as well as a history of the Port Phillip District/Victoria.
This book is an invaluable resource for someone who had ancestors that travelled from Somerset to Victoria during this time period. The Trove website has a list of libraries where a copy of the book can be found.
