Ernest Edward Meiklejohn summary

For the last two weeks, I have done my Trove Tuesday posts about Ernest Edward Meiklejohn.  For today’s post, I have decided to summarise all the information I have found so far about Ernest.

Ernest was born in 1871 in Sydney, New South Wales.  His parents were Donald Sinclair Meiklejohn and Harriet Fountain.

In 1882, his mother remarried, after advertising for news of her husband Donald Sinclair Meiklejohn.  At this time, if a spouse had been absent for seven years, then the wife (or husband) could remarry.

This would indicate that Donald had left the family by about 1875.  Ernest therefore may not have had any memories of his father.

Ernest married Jane Elizabeth Wilson on 1 February 1893, at her parents’ home Ingleside, in Botany Street, Waverley, New South Wales. Their first child, Raymond St Clair Meiklejohn, was born 13 August 1893 at Waverley.

In 1894, Ernest disappeared from Sydney, after embezzling money from his employer Quong Tart.  He returned to Sydney in 1895, and was charged with embezzlement.

His second child, a daughter Iolene, was born 13 February 1896, and died 9 days later on 22 February 1896.

Ernest may have been moving backwards and forwards between Western Australia and Sydney for several years, as he resigned as auditor in April 1897

The next record found for Ernest was an advertisement in 1902.
