The first person in my tree with this surname was Elizabeth Quy.
My ancestral line is:
1 Lois Whimpey
2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)
6 Wilfred Palmer Marr (1892-1955)
7 Edith Meriden Docwra (1904-1948)
14 Harry Docwra (1866-1934)
15 Emily Alice Oliver (1877-1925)
28 Alfred Docwra (1824-1903)
29 Mary Scott (1830-1885)
56 Tempest Sell (1787-1861)
57 Jane Docwra (1800-1840)
114 William Docwra (1768-bef 1813)
115 Elizabeth Quy (1771-1852)
Based on census records, and her burial record, Elizabeth was born about 1771 in Linton, Cambridgeshire. Her parents were probably Simon Quy and Mary Blott, as they were the only Quy family living in Bassingbourn.
Elizabeth married William Docwra on 16 October 1793 at Bassingbourn. One of the witnesses was Sarah Quy, and Simon and Mary Quy had a daughter Sarah.
Elizabeth appeared on the 1841 Census at North End Bassingbourn. She was age 70, born in county. Also in the household was Alfred Docwra, age 17. Alfred would have been her grandson, the illegimitate son of Elizabeth’s daughter Jane.
The 1851 Census shows that an Elizabeth Docwra was in the Union Workhouse at Bassingbourn. Although the age was listed as 69 years, this is the most likely entry for Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was buried 20 May 1852 at Bassingbourn, age 82.
230 Simon Quy/Quoy
231 Mary Blott
I found a christening record for a Simon Quoy on 14 February 1735 at West Wickham, Cambridgeshire, at FamilySearch, parents Simon and Mary Quoy, Since Elizabeth Quy was born at Linton, which is near West Wickham, this seems to be the most likely baptism for Simon, and that Simon and Mary were visiting family at West Wickham when Elizabeth was born. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a baptism record for Elizabeth in order to confirm this.
Simon Quy married Mary Blott 12 October 1771 at Litlington, Cambridgeshire, England. Simon was a bachelor from Bassingbourn, and Mary was a spinster “of this parish”.
I have found the following children on the Basingbourn Parish Registers:
- Mary Quy christened 26 December 1773
- Sarah Quy christened 11 February 1776
- Ann Quoy christened 8 March 1778
- Simon and Jane Quoy twins christened 13 June 1780
- Jane Quoy christened 16 September 1782 aged 1 year and a week.
FamilySearch also shows the following entries at at West Wickham:
The marriage of Simon Quoy and Mary Freeman on 6 September 1732. These were probably Simon’s parents.
Christening entries for the children of Simon and Mary:
Jane Quoy on 18 December 1737
Mary Quoy on 28 January 1732,
Mary Quoy on 16 November 1740.
There was also the marriage of Mary Quoy, father Simon Quoy, to Thomas Richardson on 19 October 1758 at Linton
I have not been able to trace the family any further back at this stage.
