The first person in my tree with this surname was my great grandmother, Henrietta Louisa Russell.
My ancestor line is:
1 Lois Whimpey
2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)
4 John Ernest Whimpey (1884-1960)
5 Ivy May Harley (1890-1959)
10 Alexander Alexander Harley (1866-1939)
11 Henrietta Louisa Russell (1865-1949)
Henrietta was born 22 November 1865 at Staffordshire Reef, Victoria, Australia. She was baptized on 8 January 1869 at the Holy Trinity Church at Buninyong, where her grandfather, Garrett John Russell, was the incumbent.
Henrietta married Alexander Alexander Harley on 25 July 1888 at the Methodist Church in South Melbourne. They had 2 children in South Melbourne, before moving to a dairy farm at Woolamai (near Phillip Island). Henrietta and Alexander had 6 children that we know of:
- Harrie Alexander Harley 1889-1944
- Ivy May Harley 1890-1959
- Cecil Rupert Harley 1896-1977
- Keith Aubrey Harley 1905-1941
- Dorothy Agnes Harley 1907-1976
- Edna Winifred Harley 1909-1987
They are also thought to have had a stillborn child between Cecil and Keith.
Henrietta lived on the farm at Woolamai, known as “Hazel Glen”, for the rest of her life, and died there on 17 November 1949. She was buried 18 November 1949 at the Kilcunda Cemetery
22 Thomas Henry Russell (1844-1892)
23 Maria Louisa Doyle (1847-1925)
Thomas Henry Russell was born 11 June 1844 in Cork, Ireland. He migrated to Australia with his mother and siblings in 1856 on the “Almora”.
Thomas married Maria Louisa Doyle on 17 April 1865 at Buninyong. His father, Garrett John Russell, officiated at their wedding. Thomas and Maria had 10 children:
- Henrietta Louisa Russell 1865-1949
- Edward Fitzgerald Russell 1867-1943
- Garrett John Russell 1869-1949
- William Charles Russell 1872-1874
- William Owen Edward Russell 1876-1895
- Victoria May Russell 1877-1938
- Thomas Henry Russell 1880-1882
- Annie Russell 1883-1884
- Thomas Henry Leopold Russell 1885-1966
- Frank Ernest Russell 1889-1964
Thomas died 14 October 1892 at Hotham East. He was buried 16 October 1892 at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
44 Garrett John Russell (1817-1877)
45 Susan Greene (1819-1884)
Garrett John Russell was christened 13 April 1817 at St. Finbarre’s, South Cork. St. Finbarre’s was a Catholic Church. Garrett was later ordained a minister of the Church of England and Ireland.
Garrett married Susan Greene around 1839. I have been unable to find their marriage record, so I don’t know if they were married in a Catholic or Protestant church. I have also not been able to find baptism records for their children yet. From other records the children of Garrett and Susan were:
- Charles Martin Edward Russell 1840-1906
- Martin Bedford Russell 1842-1883
- John William Russell 1843-1924
- Thomas Henry Russell 1844-1892
- Susanna Marie Russell 1849-1880
- Edward Russell 1851-1898
- Robert Frederick Russell 1853-1917
- Francis Richard Russell 1855-1918
Garrett was appointed the incumbent of the Holy Trinity Church in Buninyong around 1856, which is why the family came to Australia. The ship Garrett came on is not yet known. His eldest son Charles never came to Australia – he decided to join the Army instead. The second son Martin, and Garrett’s mother Mary Russell nee Moore, came out together in 1856 on the “Morning Light”, while Garrett’s wife Susan, and the rest of the children, came out at the same time on the “Almora”.
Garrett died 10 February 1877 at Buninyong, and was buried 13 February 1877 at the Buninyong Cemetery.
88 Martin Russell (ca. 1790-bef 1856)
89 Mary Moore (1793-1862)
No baptism record has been found for Martin yet, so I don’t have a date of birth for him, or details about his parents.
Martin married Mary Moore on 23 April 1811 at St Mary’s Parish in Cork. Martin and Mary had 5 children:
- Ann Russell 1815-?
- Garrett John Russell 1817-1877
- Margaret Russell 1821-?
- Patrick Russell 1824-?
- Mary Ann Russell 1832-1866
- Edward 1835-?
Martin probably died before 1856, but I have not yet found a death record for him
