I have two branches of my family with the Scott surname, both beginning with a Mary Scott. This week, I will be looking at the family of the Mary Scott who was married to Alfred Docwra.
My ancestral line is:
1 Lois Whimpey
2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)
6 Wilfred Palmer Marr (1892-1955)
7 Edith Meriden Docwra (1904-1948)
14 Harry Docwra (1866-1934)
15 Emily Alice Oliver (1877-1925)
28 Alfred Docwra (1824-1903)
29 Mary Scott (1830-1885)
Mary was born about 1830, possibly in Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire, England. Her parents, Joseph Scott and Mary Muncy had been married in 1826 in Guilden Morden, and the family moved to Steeple Morden between 1826, and 1833 when Mary’s younger brother David was born. No baptism entry has been found for Mary yet.
Mary married Alfred Dcowra on 5 March 1852 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They had 10 children:
- Charles (1854-1855)
- Elizabeth (1855-1926)
- Stephen (1857-1923)
- James (1859-1951)
- Mary (1862-1942)
- Joseph (1864-1941)
- Harry (1866-1934)
- David (1868-1954)
- Edith (1870-1960)
- Emma (1873-1873)
Mary died 10 December 1885 in Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia. She was buried 12 December 1885 at the Cheltenham Cemetery.
58 Joseph Scott (1797-1800)
59 Mary Muncy (1806-1936)
Joseph was born about 1797, and christened 29 May 1800 at Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire, England.
He married Mary Muncy on 4 March 1826 at Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire, England. They had 4 children:
- Ann (1826-1837)
- Mary (1830-1885)
- David (1833-1910)
- Joel (1836-?)
Mary Muncy was buried 4 December 1836 at Steeple Morden. Joseph then married Emma Hodge on 5 September 1841 at Bassingbourn.
Joseph and Emma had the following children:
- Edith Elizabeth (1841-1928)
- John Hodge (1843-1844)
- Isabel (1844-1847)
- Joseph (1846-1917)
Joseph was buried 26 October 1846 at Bassingbourn.
116 William Scott (ca. 1755-?)
117 Mary West (1755-1844)
I don’t have much information about William at this stage. He married Mary West on 14 September 1783 at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England. They had 8 children:
- John (1786-1861)
- Sarah (1788-1875)
- Mary (1790-1874)
- Ann (1794-1795)
- William (1794-1869)
- Joseph (1797-1946)
- Ann (1797-?)
- Edith (1802-1884)
Although I have found a burial for Mary, I have not been able to find a burial record for William. I have also not yet found a baptism record for William in Melbourn. Since there are a number of possible baptisms. The two that are closest to Melbourn are
William Scott, christened 20 March 1757 at Great Shelford, parents William and Martha
William Scott, christened 26 June 1753 at Grantchester, parents James and Mary.
Unfortunately, as I am unable to determine which is for our William, I have not been able to trace this line any further back at this stage.
