Surname Saturday – Sturrock

The first ancestor in my tree with this surname was Agnes Sturrock.

My ancestral line is:

1 Lois Whimpey

2 Ivon Walter Whimpey (1923-2009)
3 Edith Jean Marr (1922-1990)

6 Wilfred Palmer Marr (1892-1955)
7 Edith Meriden Docwra (1904-1948)

12 Henry Palmer Marr (1859-1944)
13 Mary Reeves (1864-1951)

24 James Marr (1827-1899)
25 Martha Richardson (1827-1882)

48 John Marr (1790-1851)
49 Agnes Philp (1791-1864)

98 Thomas Philp
99 Agnes Sturrock

I have limited information about Agnes.

Agnes Sturrock married Thomas Philp on 30 August 1777 at Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.

Thomas and Agnes had a daughter Agnes Philp, who married John Marr. The 1861 Scotland Census shows that Agnes was born about 1790 in Arbroath (although the 1851 census shows she was born in Dundee).  I have been unable to find a baptism for Agnes Philp, or any other children for Thomas and Agnes, and a search of the Statutory Death Registers on the ScotlandsPeople website for anyone with the surname Philp (including name variants), and mother surname Sturrock (including name variants), only brought up the death of Agnes.

Since Thomas Philp and Agnes Sturrock were married in 1777, and their daughter Agnes was born about 1790, this indicates that Agnes and Thomas were married in their late teens, early twenties, so I searched for an Agnes Sturrock born between 1750 and 1760.  The only entry found was for Agnes Sturrock, christened 21 July 1751 at Forfar.  Her father’s name was David.

However, because I haven’t been able to find any baptism records for any of her children, I can’t be sure that this christening is for my Agnes Sturrock.
