Surname Saturday

Surname Saturday – Alison

A few weeks ago, I finished the surnames of my direct line ancestors, and over the last two weeks, I wrote posts about my ex-husband’s parents.  In these posts, I copied the information from my family tree in Legacy. But this week, when I started to write this post, I decided that, since I already have the family tree on my site, there wasn’t much point just copying the information into a post.

In my posts about my direct line ancestors, I provided a summary of all my direct line ancestors with a particular surname.  I have decided to continue this with the ancestors of my children, from their father’s side.  I did my side in alphabetical order, so I’ve decided to do his side in alphabetical order as well. The first surname is Alison.

The ancestral line is:

1 My ex-husband

2 Murray Irwin Willis (1931-1964)
3 Shirley Patricia Casey (1936-2013)

4 Thomas Arthur Willis (1900-1957)
5 Dorothea Isabella Sinclair Smith (1904-1979)

10 Thomas Smith (1873-1935)
11 Louisa May Clyne (1881-1949)

20 James Smith (1841-1938)
21 Dora Mansfield (1849-1913)

40 Thomas Smith (1813-1842)
41 Rachel Hamilton Wilson (1813-1884)

80 Thomas Smith (1770-?)
81 Jane (or Jean) Alison (1777-?)

Jane Allison was born 7 March 1777 and christened 9 March 1777 at Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland.  She was the daughter of Alexander Allison and Ann Brown.

Jane married Thomas Smith (b, abt 1770) on 14 March 1796 at Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had 11 children:

  • Janet Smith (1797-?)
  • Ann Smith (1798-1876)
  • James Smith (1800-1803)
  • Agnes Smith (1802-1807)
  • Margaret Smith (1804-?)
  • Jean Smith (1806-?)
  • Agnes Smith (1809-1812)
  • Thomas Smith (1811-1813)

162 Alexander Alison (1739-1822)
163 Ann Brown (1755-?)

Alexander was christened 10 December 1739 at Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland.  He was the son of John Alison and Margaret Park.

He married Ann Brown on 19 July 1773 at Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland.  They had 10 children:

  • Janet Alison (1774-?)
  • Margaret Alison (1775-bef 1783)
  • Jane Alison (1777-?)
  • Ann Alison (1779-?)
  • Robert Alison (1780-1790)
  • David Alison (1782-?)
  • Margaret Alison (1783-?)
  • Alexander Alison (1786-1787)
  • John Alison (1788-?)
  • Robert (1790-?)

I have a date of death of 1822 from an Ancestry Public Member Tree, however I have not been able to find a corresponding burial on ScotlandsPeople.

324 John Allison
325 Margaret Park

There were two possible baptisms between 1700 and 1721 – John Alison christened 18 August 1706 at Stevenston, parents John Alison and Katharine Brown, and John Alison christened 28 October 1705 at Kilwinning, parents Andrew Alison and Isobel Weir.

I have been unable to find a marriage record for John Alison and Margaret Park.

John and Margaret had 3 children:

  • Anabella Alison (1737-?)
  • Alexander Alison (1739-?)
  • Thomas Alison (1742-?)
