Latest research – Mary Ann Slawson

In the last couple of weeks, I have been researching the children of Elizabeth Skempton, to determine whether there were more grandchildren than I had in my family tree. Last week, I focused on Elizabeth’s 5th child, Elizabeth Slawson, so this week, my research will be on the 6th child, Mary Ann Slawson.

The information I already had showed that Mary Ann was born in December 1844 at Geddington, Northamptonshire, England, and she was christened 17 August 1845 at Brigstock, Northamptonshire.  These details came from the census records and the International Genealogical Index.  Since the parish registers are now available for Northamptonshire on Ancestry.com, the first thing to do was to obtain a copy of her baptism entry.

Mary Ann appeared with her parents on the 1851 and 1861 Censuses.  In 1851 they were living at West Street, Geddington, and in 1861 they were at 91 Syke Row, Brigstock.

The only other information I had for Mary Ann was that she married Charles Perkins in 1866, and died in 1876.

When I had been looking for Mary Ann’s baptism record, I noticed that Mary Ann and Charles’ marriage record was in the London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 collection:

Mary Ann’s burial record was also on Ancestry.

The next record to find for Mary Ann was the 1871 census.

Mary Ann Perkins 1871 census
1871 census of England, Corby, Northamptonshire, folio 19, page 30, Mary Ann Perkins, age 28; digital images, ancestry.com, ancestry.com (http://home.ancestry.com.au/ : accessed 28 Dec 2016); citing PRO RG 10/1506. 1871 census of England, Corby, Northamptonshire, folio 19, page 30, Mary Ann Perkins, age 28; digital images, ancestry.com, ancestry.com (http://home.ancestry.com.au/ : accessed 28 Dec 2016); citing PRO RG 10/1506.

At the time of the 1871 census, Mary Ann had 3 children:

  • Charles born about 1864
  • Mary Ann Elizabeth born about 1867
  • Priscilla born about 1869

I then searched Ancestry for any children with the surname Perkins, father Charles, mother Mary Ann, who lived at Corby, and I found baptism entries for:

  • Mary Ann Elizabeth Perkins, baptism 12 July 1868 at Corby
  • Priscilla Perkins, baptism 2 Mar 1869 at Corby
  • Lottie Perkins, baptism 5 May 1871 at Corby
  • George Joseph Perkins, baptism 13 Sep 1874 at Corby
  • Alfred Perkins, baptism 8 August 1875 at Corby

The 1871 census showed that their son Charles Perkins was 7 years old, indicating a birth year of 1864.  Since Charles and Mary Ann weren’t married until 1866, I went searching for a baptism record for him under Mary Ann’s maiden name, Slawson, and found his baptism record:

  • Charles Perkins Slawson, baptism 29 May 1864 at Brigstock.
