Trove Tuesday

Trove Tuesday – John Hilbert Matthews

This week, I used my hints at My Heritage to determine who to do my post about.  I came across a hint for a newspaper article for a John Henry Matthews, which was linked to John Hilbert Matthews in my tree. I was about to reject the hint, but noticed that the date of death matched the date I had for John Hilbert Matthews, and the location where this John was from was where my family were living.

I therefore used Trove to find other articles, to determine if this article was for John Hilbert Matthews.

And here’s the article that lists him as John Henry Matthews.

Although this has the wrong middle name, the date of death, occupation and location match that in the other articles for John Hilbert Matthews. The final confirmation was that I checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and found only 2 men with the surname Matthews died on 8 August 1915, Ernest Matthews from the United Kingdom, and John Hilbert Matthews.
