Surname Saturday – Hooton

The first ancestor in my tree was Eliza Hooton.

The ancestral line is:

1 My ex-husband

2 Murray Irwin Willis (1931-1964)
3 Shirley Patricia Casey (1935-2013)

6 Albert George Casey (1901-1965)
7 Lilah Adela Mulder (1903-1987)

13 Caroline Elizabeth Florence Laver (1872-1934)

26 Thomas Laver (1840-1919)
27 Eliza Hooton (1842-1906)

Eliza was born in July 1842 (I can’t make out the exact date from the certificate – it was twenty something, possibly twenty ninth) at Melbourne, in the colony of New South Wales.

She married Thomas Laver on 6 February 1864 at a private house in Black Street, Brighton, in the colony of Victoria. They had 7 children:

  • John George Laver (1865-1865)
  • Emily Jane Laver (1866-1938)
  • Selina Laver (1868-1868)
  • William Henry Charles Laver (1870-1872)
  • Eva Annie Laver (1871-1905)
  • Caroline Elizabeth Florence Laver (1872-1934)
  • Thomas Ernest Laver (1879-1932)

Eliza died 17 January 1906 at her home at 37 Henry Street, Prahran, Victoria, Australia. She was buried 19 January 1906 at the Kew Cemetery.

54 John Hooton (1811-1887)
55 Eliza Patchet (1810-1888)

John was born around 1811 in Western Nottinghamshire in England. I have not yet been able to find a baptism record for him. His death and marriage certificates list his father’s name as Joseph.

John married Eliza Patchet (or Patchett) on 16 January 1838 at Radford, Nottinghamshire, England. They had the following children:

  • Henry Hooton (1838-1920)
  • Emily Hooton (1840-1923)
  • Eliza Hooton (1842-1906)
  • Edmund Hooton (1845-1845)
  • John Hooton (1846-1886)
  • Mary Ann Hooton (1849-1931)
  • Selina Hooton (1851-1933)
  • Charles Hooton (1854-1931)

John died 21 July 1887 at Thomas Rd, Brighton East, in the colony of Victoria. He was buried 24 July 1887 at the Brighton Cemetery.

Because I haven’t been able to find a baptism record for John, I have not been able to trace this family back any further at this stage.
