Australia & New Zealand Censuses & Voter lists

Last week, I compared the collections on MyHeritage, FindMyPast and Ancestry for the Australian Electoral rolls.  To decide which collection to look at this week, I compared the categories from the 3 sites.

comparison of 3 main website categories

The collections from MyHeritage and Ancestry are similar, but there are less main categories at FindMyPast, which makes a straight comparison a bit tricky.

Since Census & Voter lists is the first category on the list for both My Heritage and Ancestry, I’ve decided to look at these collections first, and I will be checking for other collections for Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) in this category.

MyHeritage only has the 11 collections from the Australian Electoral rolls, which I covered last week, so this week I will just be comparing the collections at FindMyPast and Ancestry.
ancestry
Ancestry has 14 collections in this category, the 2 collections I mentioned last week, and also:

Title Records
New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981 20,839,229
New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849 277,066
New South Wales, Australia, Government Gazettes, 1853-1899 2,297,817
1901 New South Wales, Australia Census 259,940
1891 New South Wales, Australia Census 190,892
1841 New South Wales, Australia, Census 19,658
1828 New South Wales, Australia Census (TNA Copy) 52,001
New South Wales, Australia, Returns of the Colony, 1822-1857 79,904
1828 New South Wales, Australia Census (Australian Copy) 45,710
New South Wales, Census and Population Books, 1811-1825 71,715
New Zealand, Maori Voter and Electoral Rolls, 1908 & 1919 35,105
Canterbury, New Zealand, Provincial Rolls, 1868-1874 24,024

findmypast

Since the collection at FindMyPast is called “Census, Land and Surveys”, I used the subcategories, and first checked the Census records for Australia and New Zealand:

New South Wales 1841 Census Census, Land & Surveys Census
New South Wales 1891 Census Census, Land & Surveys Census
New South Wales 1901 Census Census, Land & Surveys Census
New South Wales, 1828 Census Householders’ Returns Census, Land & Surveys Census
South Australia Census Census, Land & Surveys Census
Northern Territory Census Census, Land & Surveys Census

Then I searched for Electoral rolls and found FindMyPast has 2 collections from New Zealand, as well as the Australian Electoral rolls I mentioned last week

New Zealand Electoral Rolls Census, Land & Surveys Electoral Rolls
New Zealand Electoral Rolls 1925 Census, Land & Surveys Electoral Rolls

I skipped over the collections from the subcategory Lands and Estates, since they would probably correspond with the Convict, Criminal, Land and Wills category on Ancestry.

FindMyPast had one other collection in the Census, Land and Survey category:

New Zealand, Women’s Suffrage Petition 1893
Census, Land & Surveys Social history

Summary

Ancestry had more collections than FindMyPast, but FindMyPast had collections that Ancestry doesn’t have.  MyHeritage didn’t have any of the Census records, and nothing at all from New Zealand.  Some of the collections at FindMyPast and Ancestry are available for free elsewhere on the internet.
