52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks – #1 John Ernest Whimpey

A couple of years ago, I participated in this challenge.  Now that I am doing my genealogy do-over, I have decided to restart this challenge, and to share the additional records and information I have found for my ancestors.

This week, I am looking at my grandfather, John Ernest Whimpey.  I ended up adding some additional columns to my database, so that I could create a timeline of the events and records for each person.  These are some of the entries for when my grandfather was living in Brown Street in Heidelberg.

This timeline shows that my grandfather lived at 3 different addresses in Brown Street: 45, 53 and 63.  The most helpful section of the directory is the locality section that lists everyone living on a street, which also includes each cross street. (The listing per street only applies to Melbourne, and I think also Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong – the locality section for country areas is an alphabetical list of everyone in each township).

This is the section in 1925, when John’s house didn’t have a number[1]

This is the section in 1926[2].

This shows that he was still in the same house, but it now had the number 45.

In 1927, the house number was now 53[3].

The house number was 53 up to 1931, and then in 1933, it was renumbered 63 Brown Street[4]

Google Maps shows that this is the current location of 63 Brown Street, Heidelberg.

Since this is the location indicated in the directories, the street numbers don’t appear to have changed since 1933.

Before 1924, John had been living in Martin Street, Heidelberg. The 1922 directory shows that he was living between Darebin St and Brown St, and appears to have been in the house closest to Brown St[5].
