I’m running late with my post this week, so I am only featuring the one record for William.
I had come across the entry for William Edward Ball (born 1825 in Gothenburg Sweden) in the UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 collection on Ancestry before, but I had only downloaded the first image that came up.
I noticed that the index entry had an age and birthplace for William, while the image didn’t. I therefore selected the next image, which gave the birth year and place for William, as well as his address. Since there was more than one image for this record, I decided to check the next image. Although this image was for someone else, it listed the ships that person had served on. I therefore decided to browse the previous images.
I had William’s date of birth from some family papers. One of the previous images provided confirmation:
William Edward Ball
Place of address 21 Charles Place Kingsland
Born at Gothenburg County of Sweden
On the third day of November 1825
Another image provided a list of ships William had served on. The first one caught my eye, as this was the name given to one of his daughters;
Ship’s name: “Edla”; Port belonging to: Stockholm; Rank: Boy; Date of service: from April 1843 to August 1846.
