52 Ancestors #26 Norman William Faulks

I have been struggling to decide what to write about for the topics suggested by Amy Johnson Crow, and when I can think about who to write about, I find I have already written posts about them, so I have decided to just write about someone I have recently been researching. I’m a few weeks behind, which is why today’s post is for Week 26 (June 25 to Jul 1).

I’ve been following the blog Lost Medals Australia for a while now. I’m not really sure why, because it’s not really a genealogy blog, but a couple of days ago the post was about Norman Faulks.

Faulks is an unusual surname, and I have a family named Faulks in my tree – my 2x great grandmother Jane Oldroyd had a brother John Oldroyd, and one of his daughters, Hannah Maria Oldroyd married Thomas Faulks.  Could this be one of their descendants?

I checked my family tree, and found I had a Norman Faulks in it.  His parents were Samuel Serpell Faulks and Laura Gertrude Nisbet. Samuel Serpell Faulks was one of the children of Hannah Maria Oldroyd and Thomas Faulks.

I didn’t have any information in my tree about Norman, except that he was deceased by 1992.  In checking my research, I found I had the death notices for Samuel Serpell Faulks, who died in 1992, and Laura Gertrude Faulks nee Nisbet, who died in 1990, and both listed their son Norman as deceased.  Since he died before 1990, I decided to check if he was on the death indexes for Victoria on the Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria website, and found he died in 1987 at Cohuna:

The post about Norman on the Lost Medals blog included a link to his entry on the World War Two Nominal Roll.  This showed he was born 20 February 1923 at Korong Vale, and his next of kin was Samuel Faulks.

I then tried to find a burial/cemetery record for him, but couldn’t find anything for Norman Faulks.  However, after I entered these extra details into my tree in RootsMagic, I got a hint from FindMyPast for a N W Faulks in the Australia Billion Graves cemetery index record set.  I then went to the BillionGraves site, and found that the memorial included a headstone photo that showed:

VX110377 SAPPER
N. W. FAULKS
2/4 FD. SQUADRON R.A.F.
29.1.1987         AGE 63

The service number is the same as the one from Norman’s service record, confirming this was for Norman, so I was now able to add a death date and burial place for him.
