Sunday Afternoon Genealogy Fun – Date Your Grandfather Was Born

Each week on Randy Seaver’s Genea-musings blog he has a post for Saturday night Genealogy fun. Because of the time difference, I have called my series Sunday Afternoon Genealogy Fun. This week’s mission was:

1)  What day of the week was your Grandfather born (either one)? Tell us how you found out.

2) What has happened in recorded history on your Grandfather’s birth date (day and
month)? Tell us how you found out, and list five events.

3)  What famous people have been born on your Grandfather’s birth date?  Tell us how you found out, and list five of them.

4)  Put your responses in your own blog post, in a comment on this blog post, or in a status or comment on Facebook.

1) I wrote about my grandfather, John Ernest Whimpey, in my post Sunday Afternoon Genealogy Fun – The Day Your Grandfather Was Born, so for this post I chose my other grandfather, Wilfred Palmer Marr.

Wilfred was born 19 December 1892, which was a Monday.  I found this out by using the Calendar feature in Legacy Family Tree.

2) I found the following 5 events at https://www.onthisday.com/day/december/19

1776 Thomas Paine publishes his 1st “American Crisis” essay beginning”These are the times that try men’s souls” (date disputed)

1783 William Pitt the Younger becomes the youngest ever British Prime Minister at age 24

1932 British Broadcasting Corp begins transmitting overseas

1950 Tibet’s Dalai Lama flees Chinese invasion

1958 1st radio broadcast from space, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower Christmas message “to all mankind, America’s wish for peace on Earth and goodwill to men everywhere”

3) These are the 5 famous birthdays I chose from https://www.onthisday.com/birthdays/december/19

1554 Philip William, Prince of Orange (1584) and Knight of the Golden Fleece (1599), born in Buren, Gelderland (d. 1618)

1778 Princess Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte, eldest child of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI (d. 1851)
