Researching your family history

Using multiple sources to confirm information

I was recently researching my great grandmother, Henrietta Louisa Russell’s brother, Edward Fitzgerald Russell.  I had a copy of his death certificate, which showed that he died at 62 Stirling Street Footscray, and the death certificate listed this as his residence.

Then I came across an entry in the Victoria, Australia, Wills and Probate Records, 1841-2009 collection on Ancestry, which matched his death date, but it listed his death place as Mt Evelyn (I already have an issue with this collection, because what they have as the death place is actually the place of residence).

This appeared to be for my Edward, because the date of death matched, but I wasn’t sure, because I expected the place to be Footscray, since that was supposed to be both his place of death and his residence.  I then went search for his obituary, and found this probate notice in the Argus, which contained details about where he had been living.

I then did a search of the Electoral rolls, and found that from 1934 to 1943 he had been living in Silvan Road Mt Evelyn.
