Henry Edward Russell

As part of my genealogy do-over, I have been researching my ancestors and their siblings, and mainly using Ancestry, so that I can do as much research as possible before my subscription expires at the end of July.  In researching my 3x great uncle John William Russell, I found his death notice

I already had details for his daughter Ethel, but this notice mentioned John also had a son Harry of Shepparton and Seymour.  I didn’t yet have Harry in my tree.

There was also an article in the Argus the same day with more information:

This article provided the information about John’s son Henry that he worked for the Victorian Railways.

I therefore did a search on Ancestry for a Henry Russell who might have lived in Shepparton, and found an entry on the 1924 Electoral roll for Henry Edward Russell. This Electoral roll showed that he was the station master at the Shepparton Railway Station.

I then searched for a death entry for Henry Edward Russell, and found an entry for Henry Edward Russell, who died in 1933 at Gardenvale, aged 66 years. His parents were listed as John William Russell and Mary Calder.

John’s wife Rosa had died earlier in the year 1924, and her death notice only listed their daughter Ethel. John and Rosa had been married in 1869, and his age at the time of his death indicated that Henry was born about 1867, so this was additional evidence that Henry was a child of John from a previous relationship.

I then found Henry’s death notice, which listed his wife’s name, and that he was the loved father of Monty and Miki.

I was unable to find a marriage entry for Henry to a Kathleen, and the names Monty and Miki appeared to be nicknames, so I went searching for Kathleen’s death notice

Kathleen's death notice

This listed her as the mother of Desmond, so I searched Ancestry for a Desmond Russell, and found an entry for Desmond Meredith Russell, father Edward Henry, mother Kathleen, died 1981 at Brigh, born about 1898.  I also found a birth entry for him, which showed his parents were Hy Edw Russell and Kathleen Veronic Desmond.

I then decided to search for a person with the last name Russell, father’s last name Desmond, and I found a death entry for Cath Harriet Russell, mother Ellen Oregan, father Michl Desmnond, who died in 1937 at Hawthorn.  This corresponded with the death year and place for Kathleen.

I also found an entry in the  Victoria, Australia, Wills and Probate Records, 1841-2009 collection for Catherine H Russell, death date 7 January 1937, death place Hawthorn.  The date of death matched Kathleen’s death notice, so this appeared to be the same person.

I was then able to find the marriage entry for Cath Hart Desmond to Hy Russell in 1896.    I also found the birth entry for Catherine, which showed she was born in 1873 in Buninyong. Since this was where the Russell family had also lived, this was further evidence I was on the right track.  I still want to get John’s death certificate and Henry’s marriage certificate as further confirmation.
