Trove Tuesday

Trove Tuesday – Robert James Clement

I knew from the inquest entry on the PROV (Public Record Office Victoria) website that Robert had drowned, and I knew from the death index that he died in 1936, but when I searched for articles for him using “Robert Clement” for the year 1936 nothing came up, so I then tried Clement drowning (still using the year 1936), and found the following articles.

NEWRY DROWNING ACCIDENT

Little Toddler Fell Into Creek

Robert James Clement, aged two years and four months, was found drowned in nine to twelve inches of water in a creek running through his father’s property 200 yards from the homestead at Newry on Tuesday afternoon.

The child was playing around the home of his grandmother and his father’s sister, and was last seen about 1.30 p.m. About 1.50 p.m., Jean Annie Clement informed her brother that the child was missing.

A search party was immediately arranged, and the whole property was searched. The child was found in the water by the edge of the creek by a young man. Artificial respiration was tried without avail.
