Mary Ann Snelgrove Hedley

Mary Ann was born 7 Sep and christened 1 Oct 1847 in Frome, Somerset, England, the eldest child of Edward Snelgrove and Mary Ann Whimpey (Mary was the daughter of my 3x great grandparents William Whimpey and Elizabeth Clements)[1].

I have not yet found Mary on the 1851 census.  In 1851 her father Edward was a lodger in the household of Henry Martin in North Bradley, Wiltshire[2], while her mother Mary was a servant in the household of Francis Wigston in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire[3]. In 1861, the family were living at Liberty of the Rolls, Middlesex, England[4]. Her mother, Mary Ann Snelgrove nee Whimpey died 30 March 1870[5], and the banns for Mary Ann Snelgrove (Snellgrove) to Hornby Hedley had been read a month earlier, on 6, 13 and 20 February 1870[6]. In 1871, Hornby and Mary were living in St Dunstan in the West, London[7]. They were married on 18 August 1873 at St John the Evangelist, Lambeth, Surrey[8].

Hornby and Mary Ann Hedley emigrated to South Australia in 1874. They left London on 14 February 1874[9], Plymouth on 22 February 1874 and arrived in South Australia on 10 May 1874[10]. After that, I have found no trace of Mary Ann.

Hornby died 12 Nov 1919 in Adelaide, South Australia[11]. He was listed as Henry Hornby Hedley.  Although there is a family tree on Ancestry that surmises that Henry was a son of Hornby and Mary Ann, the death entry lists his age as 77 years old, which is reasonably consistent with Hornby’s birth in 1845.  Henry Hornby Hedley had 6 children from 1885 to 1898, but their mother’s name was Mary O’Donnell.  I have found a death entry for Mary Ann Hedley in 1932, but she was 71 years old, which would indicate a birth year of 1861. Since my Mary Ann was born in 1847, this would therefore be for Mary nee O’Donnell.  There was 11 years between Hornby and Mary Ann Snelgrove’s arrival in 1874 and his first child in 1885, so it would appear that Mary Ann Snelgrove Hedley died between 1874 and 1885, and that Hornby remarried, however I haven’t been able to find a death entry for Mary Ann Hedley, nee Snelgrove, or a marriage entry for Henry Hornby Hedley and Mary O’Donnell.  The only notice I have been able to find on Trove is the death entry of Mary Ann Hedley in 1932.
