Australia – Newspapers

Kerry’s Family History Research Pages – Newspapers.  This website provides details of other newspapers that may be helpful in finding birth, death and marriage information.

State Library of Victoria  The State Library of Victoria has copies of original newspapers for latest editions and older newspapers on microfilm.  The newspapers are mainly for Victoria, but there are also newspapers from major cities in other Australian states, as well as some overseas newspapers.Other State Libraries around Australia would have similar collections.  I have set up a separate page for the Newspapers accessed at the State Library of Victoria.

The Age (1990-present). This index is free to search, although there may be a charge to view some articles.  The index is not just for The Age (Melbourne), but also includes other Fairfax publications, including Sydney Morning Herald and Newcastle Herald.

The Herald-Sun (Melbourne). This website has a Tributes section, where Tributes, Obituaries and Funeral notices from past issues can be accessed.  The first issue available online is 1 September 1998.

The Ryerson Index This website contains an index of death notices, obituaries and probate notices from various Australia newspapers.  This index is free.  This is only an index, so to view the full articles, you will need to use one of the other resources listed.

Trove This website has images from a range of historical newspapers around Australia, The number of newspapers already added is quite extensive (I found articles in over 30 newspapers just entering my maiden surname, which is an uncommon name), and more newspapers are continually being added. This website is free. Due to copyright, there are no newspapers available from 1955.   For later issues, refer to the alternate resources above.
